“Socks and Cakes” takes a short, sweet look at the idea of friendships and relationships by looking at five friends at a dinner party. Personally, it’s too short; writer-director Antonio Padovan sets up intriguing scenarios between these five characters– centered around the character of Harry (Timothy J. Cox), whose ex Amanda (Kirsty Meares) is now married to Richard (Jeff Moffitt); they are the hosts of the party. Also invited are David (Ben Prayz) and Sophie (Alex Vincent); David is insufferable, while Sophie is a warm individual who could do better. The conversations are reminiscent of those Woody Allen typically writes, but the results are far less intriguing. A big part of the problem is the length; 12 minutes is far too short to explore these characters and the scenarios we see entirely. Brevity is well and good, but too brief and the viewer feels short-changed in the end, as I was when this film ended.
