Fil Rouge (“The Red Thread”) (Short)
“The Red Thread” is the first of two shorts I’ve had the pleasure of watching from the French director, Luc Plissonneau. He is a terribly gifted storyteller, and I was profoundly happy to read in his email that among his ideas for a feature film was to expand “The Red Thread,” because I felt like the 17 minutes of this short film went by far too quickly– always the sign of a good movie. And this is a very good movie indeed, as an old vineyard owner recounts significant moments of his life with his daughter, with the wine vintages she gives him to taste opening up his memories of moments both joyous and tragic. It’s a wonderful structure to follow, and Plissonneau’s filmmaking technique is subtle, and remains focused on the characters and emotions rather than overwrought melodrama that would make the film difficult to watch. I’m quite eager to see how he turns this seed of an idea into a full-blown, well-aged vintage that will be a delight on the taste buds.
