“Pink Moon” is a short film intended to pose a “what if?” scenario for people to consider. That “What if?” is simply this: What if heterosexuality were outlawed, homosexuality was the accepted relationship in society, and a secretly heterosexual couple got pregnant, and tried to have an abortion, which is illegal? That’s basically the premise of Sal Bardo’s film, and while it’s an interesting one, intended to have people consider the realities of what it’s like for the LBGT community in our actual society by flipping the tables, I couldn’t help but be left asking one question of the world in the film that I hate that I’m asking…is this how it’s always been in the film’s society, with homosexual partnerships being the norm, or did something change in society that made homosexuality more acceptable? I hate that I’m asking this question, as I do consider myself a straight ally for LGBT rights, but really, doesn’t that just validate the film in and of itself? That I’m forced to look at my own individual prejudices that may still remain, and realize that this is a question I shouldn’t even be asking? My understanding is that a feature-length version of “Pink Moon” may be on the way, and I very much want to see that to see that if it comes to fruition. The other part of this film deals with the issue of reproductive rights, adding another layer of the film’s arguments for the importance of individual freedoms, but the notion of love being dictated by societal norms is the most important part of the film. We cannot be told whom we have to love. Sexual orientation is not a choice that is ours to make, and no one should be castigated in society for whom they love. That is ultimately the point of “Pink Moon,” and why a film like it is important. For too many people, this is less a “What if?” scenario than a “What is” way of living every day. The real question we should be asking is what are we going to do to change it?
