Steak Knives (Short)

Movie review score
C+

At the end of a birthday dinner with friends, John and Katrine are saying goodbye to the friends. After they’ve left, Katrine has a bone to pick with John, who got her steak knives for her birthday. Needless to say, she is not pleased with that choice, and she isn’t shy about making that known. Chris Esper’s film is a brisk 3-minutes long, as we see John try and get out of this mess with a sudden revelation, and that’s just the right length for what is basically a single scene short film. The performances are okay, but not really that strong (a little too “acted,” if you know what I mean), although I will say, the ending worked for me as the only way to finish this short, letting us hope for the best for John, but at the same time, know that he kind of has it coming depending on who is on the phone. He did give his wife steak knives for her birthday, after all.
